VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- All the pieces were in place for a record run.
On Saturday, then, all that Montverde Academy's girls needed to do was to execute, and that's certainly what the foursome from Florida did, securing a new high school national record in the 4x400 indoors, breaking a nearly 20-year-old record formerly held by Long Beach Poly in 3:37.63.
The Eagles were led by Adaejah Hodge, Michelle Smith, Alivia Williams and Skyler Franklin, a group of three seniors and a sophomore who officially split 54.10, 53.79, 54.75 and 55.00.
Hodge, Smith and Williams were tried-and-tested teammates on 4x400 relays before.
But the missing piece was Frankllin, who Montverde Academy coach Gerald Phiri said afterward was placed in the anchor position because of her potential -- and because he wanted to give her a sense of confidence with the season ahead.
Achieving this feat so early, the Eagles could potentially have more opportunities down the road to chase after the performance again.
The Bullis School girls finished second in 3:43.81.
The race was originally set to feature three teams, but after Mia Brahe-Pedersen went down with an injury earlier in the day, the Lake Oswego girls scratched from the field.
